    2. The equal status mentioned in Thesis 2 need not mean, "equally concrete" or "inclusive," but only, "equally real," where "real" means having a character of its own with reference to which opinions can be true or false. But becoming or process is alone fully concrete or inclusive, since if A is without becoming, and B becomes, then the togetherness of AB also becomes. A new constituent means a new totality. In this sense, becoming is the ultimate principle.

    The Wisdom of William Ernest Hocking[REVIEW]G. W. - 1979 - Review of Metaphysics 32 (4):760-760.
Four papers on Hocking, short passages from his writings, and a selected list of his books and articles. Of the four papers, one is a tribute to Hocking by Brand Blanshard, first published in 1966; another is an essay on "Dialectic in the Unfolding of Hocking’s Thought," written by his son Richard, emeritus professor of philosophy at Emory University; the third and fourth are essays, by the two editors of the volume, on Hocking’s views regarding "insight" (...)

    Gabriel Marcel and American Philosophy.David W. Rodick - 2013 - International Philosophical Quarterly 53 (2):117-130.
Gabriel Marcel’s thought is deeply informed by the American philosophical tradition. Marcel’s earliest work focused upon the idealism of Josiah Royce. By the time Marcel completed his Royce writings, he had moved beyond idealism and adopted a form of metaphysical realism attributed to William Ernest Hocking. Marcel also developed a longstanding relationship with the American philosopher Henry Bugbee. These important philosophical relationships will be examined through the Marcellian themes of ontological exigence, intersubjective being, and secondary reflection. Marcel’s relationships (...)

Radical empiricism, intersubectivity and the importance of praxis in the philosophy of Gabriel Marcel.David W. Rodick - 2014 - Philosophy and Social Criticism 40 (3):289-308.
The philosophy of Gabriel Marcel is informed by the classical tradition of American philosophy – most notably William James, William Ernest Hocking and Josiah Royce. At a time when Marcel scholarship is at risk of being eclipsed by abstract modes of philosophical discourse, a return to the classical American sources of Marcel's thought is vital. This article investigates Marcel's thought from the standpoint of James’ conception of radical empiricism, the primacy of intersubjective experience in Hocking’s philosophy, and (...)

A William Ernest Hocking reader: with commentary.William Ernest Hocking - 2004 - Nashville, TN: Vanderbilt University Press. Edited by John Lachs & D. Micah Hester.
Leading Harvard philosophy professor William Ernest Hocking (1873-1966), author of 17 books and in his day second only to John Dewey in the breadth of his thinking, is now largely forgotten, and his once-influential writings are out of print. This volume, which combines a rich selection of Hocking’s work with incisive essays by distinguished scholars, seeks to recover Hocking’s valuable contributions to philosophical thought.

Different inferences in probabilistic logics of conditionals 'preserve' the probabilities of their premisses to different degrees. Some preserve certainty, some high probability, some positive probability, and some minimum probability. In the first case conclusions must have probability I when premisses have probability 1, though they might have probability 0 when their premisses have any lower probability. In the second case, roughly speaking, if premisses are highly probable though not certain then conclusions must also be highly probable. In the third case (...)
